i've worked so hard to establish some peace of mind
i'd hate to have to learn to live without
but i will

it's hardest when my father texts me,
"are you ok? how's colorado treating you? we missed you yesterday"
it's funny he should ask because i hate to lie
but he works too hard to pay my bills for me to say i'm not fine
so i don't

i have to remind myself we all live on planet earth
i can hear my mother's voice but she can't hear my hurt
while i write this song in an attempt not to weep
could you tell me why you only love me when you're falling asleep?

the window's barely open but the neighbors can hear
my homesick melodies and a voice so austere
i wonder if they know what it's like to miss home
or if away is best for them, if it's the only way to grow
